In what seemed to be a desperate attempt to sell “Brand Rahul” to the Bihar electorate, the Congress today compared him to the late Jayaprakash Narayan, perhaps overlooking the fact that he was one of the most vociferous political opponents of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

“After (Jawaharlal) Nehru,it was Kalam (former President APJ Abdul Kalam) who addressed the children. Similarly, after Jayaprakash Narayan,it is Rahul Gandhi who has addressed the needs, aspirations and future of the youth in the country,” Congress spokesman Mohan Prakash told mediapersons here today.

Incidentally, the Congress’s main rivals in Bihar,Lalu Prasad of the RJD and Nitish Kumar of JD(U),were both part of JP’s Sampoorna Kranti (Total Revolution) movement. JP’s students’ agitation programme was said to be one of the main factors behind Indira’s decision to impose Emergency, during which he was one of the leaders who were put behind bars.

Congress sources sought to play down Prakash’s remarks, terming them as his “personal opinion”.
