In a bizarre incident, the locals of Lokkapura village in Davanagere district of Karanataka rescued a youth,Keshvamurthy (30),who was confined by his mother to a solitary room for the last 17 years.
Apparently his mother,Chowdamma, had not even let him go out for his daily ablutions or even to answer the call of nature. She used to serve him food through a window of his room all these years, the police said.
On coming to know about his confinement, the neighbours broke the wall of the room and rescued him,the police said. Initial investigations reveal that Keshvamurthy was locked in a room in his house since 1995 after he objected to her becoming a Devadasi,a religious tradition in which girls are married to God after getting separated from their husbands.
After the rescue,a barber was brought to trim his long unkempt hair. He was later taken to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) in Bangalore for a check-up.
