Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday said the government was trying to “sort out” issues around letting bars and restaurants stay open late in Mumbai — addressing widespread concern over police action targeting the city’s nightlife.

“There are certain issues on law and order which of course are there. But opening of the bars and opening of the restaurants (till) late night, issues around that in Mumbai,we are trying to sort all that out,” Chavan said at the 28th annual convention of the Indian Association of Tour Operators.

Over the last year,Assistant Commissioner of Police Vasant Dhoble of the Social Service Branch has repeatedly raided hotels and bars in what many criticised as moral policing. In most cases, the violations related to keeping the establishments open beyond the prescribed time.

The CM didn’t name the officer. He promised an easier,single-window system of clearances for performances at bars and hotels. “Whenever there is a performance in a hotel, there are permissions required to be taken, they had to be taken on a daily basis…” With PTI
