Cloudbursts over Sangla valley in Himachal’s Kinnaur district and inclement weather prevented helicopter sorties from evacuating over 100 stranded domestic and foreign tourists even as two people were killed in rain-related incidents and trains on the Kalka-Shimla route were cancelled.

The cloudbursts took place in Kaamru Nala and Barang Nala in Sangla Wednesday night and Thursday. Over 50 bighas of agriculture land and apple orchards were washed away but no loss of life was reported.

On Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal’s directions, two helicopter sorties were planned on Thursday to evacuate at least 24 foreign tourists stranded in Sangla. But due to poor visibility, the choppers could not land and returned from Rampur, said Deputy Commissioner of Kinnaur district,Mamta Chaudhary.

The road leading out of Sangla valley to Karcham continued to remain blocked due to landslides at Ruturang for the fifth consecutive day.
