Mohanlal will be seen as a chess-player in Grandmaster. But the story is not about chess and chess-players. B. Unnikrishnans Grandmaster, which has Mohanlal in the title role, tells the story of a cop. Chandrashekharan, who is brilliant at chess. He is an officer of IG rank and works with the Metro Crime-Stopper Cell. He is an intelligent, shrewd cop too,but of late he has gone low in his career. The happenings in his personal life had taken a toll on his professional life as well. Chandrashekharan is now separated from his wife,Deepthi, who is a criminal lawyer. That has not only taken away the happiness in his life, but has made his professional life reach an unprecedented low.
But then, there is Fernandez,Chandrashekharans senior in the force. Fernandez, who is the ADGP,entrusts Chandrashekharan with a very complicated case,a real hard nut to crack, which someone of the calibre of Chandrashekharan only can tackle. Assigned to assist Chandrashekharan on the mission is Kishore,a young officer. The mission is perhaps destined to change Chandrashekharans career and life. Mohanlal plays Chandrashekharan while Priyamani is his heroine for the first time and plays Deepthi. Narain is Kishore while Devan plays Fernandez. Anoop Menon also plays a pivotal character. Also in the cast are Roma,Riyaz Khan,Jagathy Sreekumar,Siddique,Babu Antony,Mithra Kurien etc. B.Unnikrishnan, who had turned to direction from script writing, had earlier made Madamby with Mohanlal. The film was a hit and Grandmaster too is an eagerly awaited movie. Says Unnikrishnan,Grandmaster is totally unlike Madamby. The plot, the treatment and the theme, everything is totally different. It has been inspired by real-life characters and incidents. There are many such people around us. The film is produced by UTV Motion Pictures.
