As BJP and SP locked horns over the proposed VHP padayatra and disrupted the Parliament on Monday,the Centre is preparing to send alerts to other states after reports from UP government said the yatra to revive Ram Janmabhoomi movement may fan across other states.
While justifying the arrest and detention of VHP leaders and workers,the UP government,in its report to the Home Ministry,said the 84-Kosi Yatra was a threat to communal harmony.
The Ministry of Home Affairs MHA said they were closely monitoring developments,with the VHP yatra planned from August 25 to September 13. In their letter to the Home Ministry,the UP administration pointed out that the timing of the event was against tradition,and was to revive youths and sadhus for a mass movement for Ram Janmabhoomi. Referring to the 1992 Babri demolition,it said that in the past,UP had witnessed communal violence when efforts were made to build the temple at the disputed site.
Sources said inputs from central intelligence agencies said VHP is trying to mobilise Hindus to disturb communal harmony. Home Ministry officials said since the movement would have violated the Supreme Court directive which asked the State government to maintain status-quo at the disputed site of Ayodhya,they will advise UP to maintain high vigil.
The UP government said that to maintain sanctity of the apex court order,additional security was deployed to prevent any untoward incident. As VHP was still insistent on going ahead with the yatra,the UP police had to arrest over 300 including VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Praveen Togadia.
There is likely to be mass movement in different parts of the country during the 19-day yatra with VHP workers from West Bengal,Gujarat,Maharashtra,Himachal Pradesh,Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir likely to congregate.
