Centre tells state: Drop Ilina case

The conference was organised by the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Vishwavidyalaya and the Indian Association for Women’s Studies.

The Centre has directed Maharashtra to withdraw a case against Ilina Sen,wife of jailed rights activist Binayak Sen,for allegedly failing to inform police about the presence of foreign delegates in a conference at Wardha last month. She had been charged violating the Foreigners Act,1946.

The conference was organised by the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Vishwavidyalaya and the Indian Association for Women’s Studies. Ilina is associated with both.

Maharashtra Police had earlier arrested the owner of a local hotel where some of the foreign delegates had stayed for failing to inform them of their arrival.

Activists lashed out at the Maharashtra government and questioned the legality of the move as the organisers had obtained advance security clearance from the Centre.
