Following the recent seizure of large amounts of cash from candidates and workers of various parties,the Election Commission on Wednesday asked district poll officers and observers and to keep a close watch on use of money for votes.
On Monday,the Keonjhar police seized Rs 28.48 lakh from a Pajero owned by Independent candidate Kusa Apat who is contesting from Champua Assembly seat. A register with details of people who would have distributed money in six gram panchayats was also seized. In the past few days,EC officials have confiscated cash from several candidates including that of the BJD. Last week,Rs 5 lakh was seized from a lodge in Puri. Though one Kailash Chandra Pradhan of Handali village in Brahmagiri Assembly seat claimed it was his money,BJD candidate from Brahmagiri Sanjaya Dasburma was found in the attached bathroom.
On April 13,three days before the Digapahandi Assembly seat went to polls,Rs 13.5 lakh was seized from a hotel room in Berhampur. Biplab Patra,son of energy minister and BJDs Digapahandi candidate,Surya Narayan Patro,was found with the cash.
