Television viewers in South and West Delhi, whose cable companies are using BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) poles without paying the power company, may have their connections cut in the coming days.
The BRPL has announced a crackdown on local operators who string their cables on BRPL lines without entering into an agreement with it or making an annual payment.
Such cables are illegal and are strung in a very shabby manner. They prove to be a safety hazard. We will be removing such cables in the coming days and will also take legal action against such operators. The total number of illegal cable connections in 19 divisions in South and West Delhi that come under BRPL,is estimated to be in the region of 2 to 2.25 lakh households. Among the errant companies, there are seven or eight large operators, including Multiple System Operators (MSOs), a BRPL official said.
BRPL had written to the errant MSOs and cable operators several times, issuing them notices asking them to enter into an agreement with the company for use of its pole infrastructure.
It had also written to the association of cable operators, asking it to circulate the note amongst its members to ensure that their consumers were not inconvenienced later, the official said.
To use the BRPLs infrastructure, cable operators have to enter into an agreement with the respective discoms and pay Rs 801 per pole per year. The estimated outstanding amount in this respect now runs into a few crores,BRPL has said.
BRPL has written to the police, asking for assistance during the cutting of illegal cables,a spokesperson said.
