Mohmandara: Militants attacked a US base in Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan Monday morning,leading to multiple explosions,a gunfight and the closure of a key road used by NATO supply trucks,officials said. Several vehicles belonging to US-led forces were torched or otherwise damaged,and three alleged attackers were killed,but the main section of the base was not breached. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the strike in the Torkham area. AP

Hasina hints at Bangla polls before Jan 2014

Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday hinted that Bangladesh’s next general election could be held any time in the three-month period before the term of parliament ends on January 24. During a meeting with top bureaucrats,Hasina was quoted by local media reports as saying the polls could be held in the 90-day period from October 27 to January 24. PTI

Tornadoes rip eastern Japan,dozens injured

Tokyo: Tornadoes tore through eastern Japan Monday,leaving dozens injured,at least one seriously,and destroying some buildings. Police in Saitama Prefecture,near Tokyo,say 63 people were reported injured. Details of their injuries were not immediately available. Kyodo News reported that the tornadoes toppled power lines,blew roofs off homes and sent debris flying,smashing windows at an elementary school. Tornadoes also struck other nearby areas,such as Chiba Prefecture. AP

Prosecutors seek arrest warrant for Red Bull heir

Bangkok: Thai authorities are seeking an arrest warrant for an heir to the Red Bull energy drink fortune after he failed to appear for his indictment in a hit-and-run case in which a policeman was killed. Prosecutor Ruecha Krairiksh says Vorayuth Yoovidhya showed an intention to flee by not appearing for indictment Monday. AP

Spain detains Great Drain robbers

Madrid: Spanish police said Monday they have arrested a gang of 10 bank robbers in Madrid who used the drains to enter and flee from bank branches. The 10 were suspected of violently robbing seven banks in the Spanish capital,police said in a statement. Four members of the gang were captured as they emerged from underground. PTI
