Zameeruddin Shah appointed new AMU V-C
LUCKNOW: Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for a period of five years,or till he attains the age of 70,whichever is earlier. The HRD Ministry communicated the decision of the President of India as Visitor of the University to the AMU Registrar. The AMU spokesperson,Rahat Abrar,said Lt Gen Shah was the Deputy Chief of Army Staff from 2006 to 2008 and was responsible for the modernisation of the Army and the management and control of the Army budget.
Missing UP girl produced in court
MUZAFFARNAGAR: The girl,whose alleged elopement drew Uttar Pradeshs DIG S K Mathurs controversial remarks defending honour killing,was produced in a court here on Friday evening and her statement recorded. The Chief Judicial Magistragte ordered that the girl be handed over to her parents custody as she is a minor. The girl,who was traced and medically examined here on Thursday,had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend belonging to a different community.
5.4 quake rocks Assam,Meghalaya
GUWAHATI: An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale rocked Guwahati and other districts of Assam around 6.14 pm on Friday,forcing people to run out of their houses in panic. The tremors were also felt in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) website,which described the earthquake as moderate,pinpointed the epicentre at latitude 26.6 degree North and longitude 93.0 degree East,which works out to be near Silghat in Nagaon district in central Assam.
