Naxals kill police patil in Gadchiroli

NAGPUR: Naxalites killed a police patil from Yeragadda village in Aheri tahsil of Gadchirioli district on Saturday. After killing Ramdas Gawde,they threw his body on the Alapalli-Sironcha highway. With this,the number of civilians killed in Gadchiroli this year has gone up to 36. Gawde is the third victim of Naxal violence this month.

Ex-Union minister’s statue recovered

JAMUI: A bronze statue of former Union minister,late Digvijay Singh which went missing,was recovered on Sunday by police from a pond in Nayagaon in Bihar’s Jamui district. Police said the miscreants had taken the bronze statue valued at Rs 6 lakh on Saturday. A search was launched soon after,and acting on a tip off,the bust was pulled out by divers,police said. The statue will be put back at its original place soon,they said. A search is on to identify and apprehend those behind the incident,police added.

Mild tremors hit Doda dist in J&K

BHADERWAH: Mild tremors hit Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district in the early hours of Sunday. Low intensity tremors,lasting a few seconds,shook the town between 2:00 am to 3:00 am,Meteorological department (MeT) officials said. No loss of life or damage to property was reported,they said.

Senior CPM leader T Govindan dead

KASARGOD: Senior CPM leader and Kerala State Committee Member T Govindan died on Sunday at a private hospital in Mangalore after a brief illness,family sources said. He was 71 years old. He is survived by his wife and four children. A three-time MP from Kasargod,Govindan had represented Kasargod in 1996,1998 and 1999. Govindan,hailing from Payyannor in Kannur district,had also functioned as the party’s Kannur District Secretary from 1989 to 1990.

Burglars take away SBI ATM

SRINAGAR: In the third such incident in as many months,burglars decamped with an ATM of a nationalised bank here,police said on Sunday. The burglars broke into the State Bank of India’s ATM room located at Gojwara on Saturday and took away the machine,police said. The exact amount kept inside the machine was not known immediately,they said. Last month,burglars had carried away an ATM of Jammu and Kashmir Bank,with over nine lakh cash inside,in Budgam district.

Ex-Chief of Naval Staff Dawson dead

BANGALORE: Former Chief of Naval Staff,retired Admiral Oscar Stanley Dawson,died here on Sunday due to brain haemorrhage. Dawson (87) was a bachelor,and he leaves behind his only sister Thelma,a press release said. Commissioned in 1943,Dawson served as the Chief of Naval Staff from March 1,1982 until his retirement on November 30,1984. He was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal,among others.

13 booked for ‘honour killing’

CHANDIGARH: 13 people have been booked in a suspected case of honour killing of an upper caste youth who had an affair with a Dalit girl,police said on Sunday. 28-year-old Krishan Nain’s body was recovered from a canal in Hisar’s Adampur on Tuesday,they said. Police said the couple recently decided to marry,which was strongly opposed by the girl’s family. Police said Nain was called to Narwana by the girl’s family,after which he went missing.
