The police on Monday recovered bodies of nine persons,all said to be non-Manipuris,from inside the Keibul Lamjao National Park,about 45 km from state capital Imphal,with all the bodies bearing bullet injuries.
A senior police officer said while the bodies were spotted around afternoon,a police party from Bishenpur,headquarters of the district by the same name,reached the spot around 6 pm.
“According to preliminary reports,the victims are said to be non-Manipuri migrants. However,details are yet to reach the state police headquarters,” the officer said over the phone from Imphal.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killings,the officer added.
Over 50 “non-Manipuri” persons,mostly Hindi-speaking migrants,engaged as labourers or in petty trades were killed in a series of incidents in and around Imphal last year.
Unofficial sources said that some locals had noticed a group of people moving into the Keibul Lamjao National Park on Monday morning.
“Later,there were reports of some gunshots,following which some locals also reported seeing some bodies,all suspected to be of Hindi-speaking migrant labourers,” sources added.
On Saturday,the security forces had killed at least six militants belonging to different outfits,including the United National Liberation Front UNLF.
While the Assam Rifles shot dead three UNLF members near the Indo-Myanmar border in Ukhrul district,three other suspected militants were killed in an “encounter” with security forces in Imphal East district.
Two members of the People’s United Liberation Front,a proscribed Islamic outfit,were also gunned down on Saturday,reports from Imphal said.
