The ruling BJP has taken to the streets accusing a Congress MP of insulting the Narmada.

Sajjan Singh Varma, the MP from Dewas, had accused Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his family members of being involved in illegal sand mining along the banks of the Narmada, and warned that “the river knows how to deal with those who rape and exploit it”.

Taking offence to the “derogatory reference” to “Ma Narmada”,the ruling party has demanded a public apology from Varma and the Congress, and threatened to undertake a series of protests and rallies across the state “to protect the river’s honour”.

“He pretends to be a devotee of Ma Narmada but if anyone is exploiting the river it’s the Chief Minister, his wife and entire family,’’ Varma had said while sharing the dais with Union Minister Kamal Nath two days ago at a function in Hoshangabad.

The MP refused to apologise, saying he only wanted to highlight illegal mining and accused the BJP of diverting attention from the serious charge.

Led by president of the party’s state unit,Prabhat Jha,BJP leaders sat on a dharna here on Monday and announced that similar protests would be held along the river bank on Tuesday, followed by a huge rally if Varma fails to apologise within 48 hours.
