BJP suspends MLA for challenging Sushil Kumar Modi leadership

Hayaghat MLA skipped party event; said Sushil ‘not a leader with mass base’

BJP on Sunday suspended Hayaghat (Darbhanga) MLA Amarnath Gami for challenging the leadership of former deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi. Gami, who had not attended the party’s function at Darbhanga on Saturday, later said Modi was “not a leader with mass base”. BJP on Saturday concluded its campaign in 141 Assembly segments contested by JD-U in last polls.

The party, that had first asked Gami to explain reasons for his absence at Darbhanga function attended by all prominent local leaders on Sunday, suspended the Hayaghat MLA.

BJP sources said Gami had been suspended on “disciplinary grounds”.

Though BJP state president Mangal Pandey was not available for comment,BJP national vice-president C P Thakur confirmed Gami’s suspension. “Gami had been challenging leadership for a while. There are ways to air grievances but speaking against party leadership in public cannot be accepted,” Thakur said.

Thakur, however, downplayed dissidence in the party saying displeasure of some leaders cannot be called dissidence.

Gami said: “The party suspended me without giving a show-cause notice. I am being punished for speaking the truth. It is true that Mangal Pandey and Sushil Modi have hijacked the party. But they should remember that there is a long queue of dissidents in the party”.
