The good show by the BJP in the local body poll in Uttarakhand is likely to create problems for the Congress Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna as it is likely to impact the partys prospects in the general election. Apart from winning a sizeable chuck of nagar panchayats, the BJP captured three key municipal corporations of Dehradun,Haridwar and Haldwani.
The failure of the Congress to ensure a victory in Gairsain even after giving it a nagar panchayat status and choosing the place as the site for new Assembly building will pinch hard on the Bahuguna government.
BJP candidate Ganga Singh Panwar defeated an independent candidate Ramchandra Gaur to win the seat. Congress candidate Puran Singh Negi was placed fourth in the race.
This loss might backfire on the Congress. The BJP which had worked hard to win in Gairsain would be in a position to stop the Congress from making inroads into its vote bank in the hill areas, a Congress source said. In the Dehradun municipal corporation,BJP candidate Vinod Chamoli trounced Surya Kant Dhasmana,vice-president of the Congress state unit. The corporation covers more than 80 per cent of the Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha seat from where the CM is planning to field his son Saket Bahuguna.
In Haridwar,BJP candidate Manoj Garg is set to become the mayor. Union Water Resource Minister Harish Rawat represents the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat.
