Launching an attack on the UPA government in Rajya Sabha over its decision to impose unilateral ban on export of cotton, the BJP on Friday staged a walkout from the House as they demanded a statement.

The BJP said it has affected farmers and triggered suicides as cotton prices have fallen sharply and questioned whether the step was taken to favour private traders.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, senior BJP leader and former party president M Venkaiah Naidu said unilateral ban on cotton exports and the “ambiguity with regard to its lifting” has resulted in a sharp fall in cotton prices causing severe hardships to cotton growers.

His remark drew strong response from Congress MPs,including Renuka Chowdhary, that led to a war of words between the treasury and Opposition benches.
