A game of one-upmanship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has left the BJP in Madhya Pradesh red-faced.

The BJP married off a Dalit girl,Anguri, with whose family Rahul had spent a night with much fanfare — invitation cards bore the name of BJP state chief Prabhat Jha and MoS for SC/ST Welfare Harishankar Khatik attended the wedding on April 24.

The party claimed Rahul had promised to arrange for her marriage but did not keep his word “after getting his share of publicity”.

Anguri’s marriage was the showpiece of a mass wedding organised by the party to embarrass Rahul.

However, the BJP,it turns out,had misidentified the girl. Worse,Anguri is only 16 years of age. And if that wasn’t enough, the man she was married to,Ramesh,is yet to separate from the woman he had married on May 6,2011.

The Congress, needless to say, came out all guns blazing on Thursday — waving documents purportedly showing Anguri’s age, photographs and invitation cards of Ramesh’s marriages — and demanded action against Jha and Khatik for solemnising the marriage of a minor.

Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh wrote to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and BJP chief Nitin Gadkari asking them to sack Jha and Khatik.

Rahul had visited Taprian village in Tikamgarh in Bundelkhand four years ago and spent a night with a Dalit family.

Jha recently visited the village and announced a relief of Rs 25 lakh, saying Rahul had left the villagers to fend for themselves.

When asked about the marriage on Thursday,Jha said the BJP only arranged for the wedding, but groom was chosen by the villagers.

Later in the evening, the party released medical certificates that purportedly show that Anguri is 18 years old and Ramesh 21.
