Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Pyarelal Khandelwal,84,died here on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest. Khandelwal was suffering from cancer.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was among those who visited the BJP headquarters to pay his last respects. He was received by senior party leaders including L K Advani,Rajnath Singh,Murli Manohar Joshi,Arun Jaitley and S S Ahluwalia.
AICC spokesman Shakeel Ahmad said Singhs visit was a sign of healthy democracy. He added: We work together in politics. There are differences among us on policies and programmes but there are no personal differences.
Vice-President Hamid Ansari also dropped in at the BJP headquarters,where Khandelwals body was kept for two hours before being taken to Bhopal for the last rites.
Known to be close to Murli Manohar Joshi,Khandelwal was the party vice-president. Recently,he was in the news as he sent a letter to the party brass and RSS leadership questioning the decision to expel Jaswant Singh.
We have lost a sincere and dedicated worker of the party. He had worked to get more than 3 per cent votes for the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in the 1950s when the Election Commission had laid down this criteria for recognising a political party as a national party, said Advani.
