The BJP on Thursday utilised the motion of thanks to Presidents Address to launch a scathing attack on the government over price rise in the Rajya Sabha. Senior leader Venkaiah Naidu said the UPA has failed in checking inflation and demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee inquiry into,what he called,the scam in import and export of sugar and wheat.
Leading the BJP charge,Naidu said the government has run out of ideas to check price rise,while internal security still remains fragile and Naxalism is on the rise. The governments foreign policy is unclear as is evident in the decision to hold talks with Pakistan after repeatedly accusing it of using terrorism as an instrument of state policy.
While the senior BJP MP attacked the government on several fronts,he focused mostly on the issue of price rise. In his trademark style,he said,When prices are violent,Congress is silent. The government has miserably failed in taking concrete steps to check runaway inflation and the Presidents address has not inspired even the UPAs allies,he added.
Defending the unprecedented Opposition walkout during presentation of the Union Budget,he said,Walking out is within our right.
Attacking the government for setting up a commission to look into the Telangana demand,he said the Union Home Minister had called a meeting of political parties from the state and had heard their views. Parties have given their opinion. Everything is recorded. Now,you are sending Srikrishna Commission. Again,it will do re-recording. Pre-recording has happened,then recording took place and now you want re-recording, he said.
Naidu criticised the government for offering to talk to the Maoists and said his party would support any crackdown on Naxalites.
The government also came under fire from the Left parties,who reminded it that all manifestations of terror,including Maoist violence,should be fought without any distinction but at the same time the interest of the tribal population should be protected.
Terming the fight against terror as non-negotiable CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said there were discordant voices in the government on the issue of Maoist violence.
He pointed out that a member of the Union Cabinet said an incident in West Bengal where policemen where killed was not carried out by the Maoists even though it has found mention in the Presidents address and the Prime Minister too has said that Maoist violence was the gravest threat to Indias internal security. How can this government survive with such a major contradiction?
We are waiting for the government to answer how they are going to settle this contradiction and what is the explanation for this contradiction, Yechury added.
CPIs D Raja said that while there should not be any compromise on internal security matters,innocents should not be targeted. In the name of internal security,tribal people are being harassed. I dont know what Operation Greenhunt means,why people are being killed by security forces and why non-violent activists are being prevented from working in tribal areas. The government should address the real issues and problems faced by the tribal people, he said.
