B S Yeddyurappa looked set on Wednesday to return as chief minister of Karnataka. The belligerent BJP leader reached Delhi this evening, and there were indications that a meeting of the party core committee tomorrow would announce the decision. Yeddyurappa will hold talks with BJP president Nitin Gadkari — who too reached Delhi this evening — and senior leaders L K Advani,Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.

Yeddyurappa claimed he had not “asked for anything, and they (the party) are not giving me anything”. Earlier in Bangalore,he had said,“I will accept whatever responsibility they will give me.”

The move comes on a day the BJP lost the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha bypoll by over 40,000 votes. It was the seat vacated by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, and the defeat underscored Yeddyurappa’s importance for the BJP in Karnataka. He is a leader of the Lingayats, the community that accounts for 18 per cent of voters in the state. Sources said a positive signal had been sent to Yeddyurappa yesterday by Gadkari and Jaitley, following which he ended his boycott of the budget session of the assembly.
