With parents across Bihar agitated over the quality of midday meal served to their children, after the Gandaman primary school tragedy, the state government has decided to discontinue midday meal at more than 600 schools. The scheme covers more than 71,000 schools.

HRD minister P K Shahi said that though education department officials have been monitoring the scheme,it was humanly impossible to supervise the mass lunch programme. The minister, who had been alleging Chhapra tragedy as “part of political conspiracy”,said,“If someone conspires to play foul games,it is difficult to control. As for ensuring food quality,we have been taking due care.”

Parents are not confident about allowing their children to eat the meal. Several schools across Saran,Begusarai and Vaishali had to stop cooking midday meal with parents protesting against the scheme.
