The TMC government is considering filing a review appeal in the Supreme Court to reschedule the panchayat election dates in view of the month of Ramzan.

The SC Friday ordered the panchayat elections to be held in five phases from July 11. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said on Saturday,“We might appeal to the court to reschedule the dates of the panchayat elections due to religious occasions like Rathayatra and Ramzan.” Rathayatra starts from July 10 while Ramzan is from July 11.

“We requested the court to consider the month of Ramzan and not fix the poll dates from July 10 to August 10,” said Banerjee adding the state government wanted the polls to be over before Ramzan. The state government also claimed that the minorities were raising questions about the poll dates. However,State Election Commissioner Mira Pandey, said,“We will follow the court’s order.”
