Ten days after a college girl was raped and killed at Kamduni village in Barasat, kicking off a series of protests through West Bengal,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the victims family on Monday around 1.45 pm. The CMs delayed visit lasted only minutes even as she faced protests by angry villagers.
In a throwback to her Opposition days,Mamata rode pillion on a motorcycle as the road leading to the village was slushy and not approachable by car.
The second-year college student, daughter of a mason, was gangraped and murdered on June 6 by a group of local youths who used to harass her every day on her way back from college. The victims family, out on search for their daughter, had traced blood stains and reached a pond from where they fished out her mutilated body.
Mamata spent only some time with the family before she walked down to the Kamduni More where villagers raised slogans of we want justice and hang the rapists. Before leaving for the spot where the rape and murder had taken place,Banerjee charged that the protesters were the CPM people.
The family of the victim have demanded death penalty for the accused and a fast-track court for speedy justice.
Banerjee assured them of justice in a month. We have set up a fast-track court for the purpose and will demand either death penalty or life sentence for the offenders, she said.
A family member on condition of anonymity said: There was no mention of providing jobs or any compensation to the victims family as we had refused it earlier.
