Mumbai Police said Friday it will come down hard on those assaulting its personnel and take stern action including rejecting their passport application, blacklisting records with employer, blocking their registration at the employment exchange and even permanently revoking their driving licence.
Likening attacking police personnel to attacking the state,a circular issued by the police commissioners office to all police stations says that information about such offenders will be given to the city polices Special Branch-1 to ensure they are not issued a character certificate, which is critical for employment and to rent space.
The circular from Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh says that attacks against the police have been on the rise and they hurt the morale of the men in uniform.
Such attacks also send a wrong message to the public, raising the question, how can a policeman who cant protect himself, protect us,the circular said. While we will resort to all measures that can be taken under law,we will also resort to all sorts of punishment that can be invoked, it adds.
The circular says photographs, finger prints and copies of all documents of the offender such as PAN card, passport,Aadhar card, gun licence, driving licence and records of business or employment will be taken. A summary of the crime will be included with these documents and sent to the respective departments for cancellation of licences, cancellation of passport application and blacklisting in the employment exchange.
Mumbai Police spokesman Nisar Tamboli said the move follows two attacks on traffic policemen on October 6 by motorists who were pulled up for violating traffic rules.
We want to keep him engaged and ensure we go all out against such criminals. We dont want him to get away loosely, he said.
