BJP leader LK Advani on Tuesday identified illegal migration from Bangladesh as the root cause of the recent Kokrajhar violence and accused the Congress of collusion in migration from the neighbouring country.
Todays situation arose firstly because of a criminal delay in dealing with the situation. But as I said, the introspection must lead to identification of the root cause, which is this issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh, Advani said at a press conference here before winding up his two-day visit to the riot-hit districts of Assam.
He alleged that the Kokrajhar riots were a result of a collusion of Government of India and Government of Assam with illegal migration and said that three problems had arisen from this. The indigenous people of Assam are feeling alienated as they are losing control over their own land, while illegal Bangladeshis have embarked on a large scale land grab policy,Advani said. The ethnic problem faced by the Bodos was also rooted to their feeling of being marginalised in their own areas, their own land,he said. And the third is that a rapid demographic change is taking place in Assam. The native residents of Assam are feeling that they would be squeezed out and disempowered by the immigrant population, he said.
