A villager was killed and 11 injured when the police opened fire on Tuesday to control a mob which attacked and seriously injured over 20 policemen and set ablaze three police vehicles in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

The toll in Monday’s violence in curfew-bound Goalpara district,meanwhile,rose to five with the recovery of one more body on Tuesday.

The clash between the police and irate locals broke out at Baghmari in Sonitpur district in the early hours when people from various ‘char’ (riverine) areas and other villagers,angry over the blocking of a private road by PGCIL,attacked and injured over 20 policemen and set ablaze three police vehicles,official sources said. The police then opened fire in which one villager was killed and 11 were injured.

Goalpara district SP Shyamal Prasad Saikia said the body of a person believed to have been killed by a violent mob has been identified as that of one Jayanta Rabha. Another person who was hacked to death and the body set on fire along with his motorbike by the mob on Monday has been identified as Rajkumar Roy. Both were residents of Dohikota village under Goalpara police station.
