Two weeks after a young woman was molested in the heart of Guwahati,the police on Monday arrested Amar Jyoti Kalita,one of the main accused,from Varanasi in UP.
Guwahati SSP A P Tiwari said Kalita is being brought to the city in the next few days on completion of formalities required for inter-state transfer of an accused.
Kalita,who featured prominently in the footage of the incident,disappeared immediately,but his face became familiar because he had even given bytes to the TV reporter while the incident was on. Kalita had allegedly refused to let the police take the victim away without the presence of woman constables.
A contractual employee of Assam Electronics Development Corporation,Kalita was a part-time actor,having played roles in a crime serial on a local TV channel. His pictures picked up from the video footage of the incident shot by a reporter of NewsLive,a local satellite news channel,were flashed by the media and police all over,prompting him to run away from Guwahati.

Tirath seeks report
New Delhi: Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath has written to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for a report on the follow-up action taken by his government on the molestation incident. In her letter,Tirath decried the fact that the victims identity was not protected but did not deal with National Commission for Womens role in it. She has asked for speedy action on the recommendations given by the NCW committee. ENS
