Until late on Wednesday night,he was S Sreesanth the once promising, always temperamental quick who could still hope to play again for India relaxing with friends in Mumbai.
A little over 24 hours later,he was S Sreesanth the alleged spot-fixer sitting alone in a room at the Delhi Police Special Cell office, silently crying. His career in cricket appeared all but over.
On more than one occasion, sources in the Special Cell said,he made straightforward,teary-eyed confessions to officers who asked him why he had done it. I made a mistake. I repent it, he allegedly told them.
Sreesanth and his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were taken to a house in south Delhis Zamrudpur after they had been produced at the residence of the chief metropolitan magistrate in the Saket court complex on Thursday. Around 11 pm,they were brought back to the Special Cell office.
Here, sources said, the three players were offered the regular mess food of chapatis, rice, dal and subzi. While the others ate,Sreesanth allegedly refused, and even declined to touch the water that he was offered.
He refused to change and spent the whole night in the same pair of blue jeans and black T-shirt that he was wearing at the time of his arrest. He was sullen,he did not speak much. We let him be. He sat on an armchair while the other two players slept. They were not talking much to each other, an officer said.
He seemed troubled by the mosquitoes in the room. He had an uncomfortable night. He did not sleep at all,and seemed to be in a state of shock, the officer added.
On Friday morning, sources said,Sreesanth accepted some tea,and appeared to be hungry. We gave him one matthi with his tea. He ate that and asked for another, said an officer. Later,he seemed to be ready to talk. If an officer walked past the room,he would stand up and say Ji sir, investigate karna hai? (Yes sir, would you like to investigate?).
Around 12.30 pm,Sreesanth was allowed a meeting with his brother and a lawyer. The meeting, sources said, lasted about 50 minutes. Sreesanths brother brought him food from home, but Sreesanth ate very little. He kept breaking down in tears, sources said.
He sat on the chair, and leaned across the table, his head in his hands, crying. He is opening up now,and has accepted his mistake. Although he claims he did so only on the advice of bookie Jiju, said an officer.
