The BJP on Monday sought to downplay former Union minister Arun Shourie’s remarks supporting the government’s recent decisions, stating that it was Shourie who had supported the ban on FDI in retail trade during the NDA rule.

“On December 16,2002,Congress had said in the Lok Sabha that FDI in multi-brand retail was anti-national. Arun Shourie, who was then the Commerce Minister, gave a strong reply and said FDI will not be allowed in multi-brand retail,” said BJP spokesperson Tarun Vijay.

Vijay also asserted that the BJP was united in its opposition to the government’s decision to allow FDI in retail trade. “The whole of BJP and all its workers speak in one voice and not with those who differ from this point. All of us are unanimous in our view,” he said.
