Cult filmmaker Jess Franco died at age 82 on Tuesday,having made nearly 200 films on themes ranging from zombies and cannibals to imprisoned women and lesbian vampires,and which transgressed the genres of horror,science fiction,and occasionally pornography.

The Spanish director’s blend of sleaze and art won him many fans and put others off . He was “too arty for the horror crowd and too macabre and lowbrow for the art crowd”,reads a tribute on the website of horror magazine Fangoria. His films include Venus in Furs (1969),about a femme fatale and loosely based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s novel,Vampyros Lesbos (1971),women-in-prison flick Sadomania (1981) and adaptations of the Marquis de Sade’s Justine and Eugenie.

Franco was given Spain’s Goya Award for lifetime achievement in 2009.
