A militant and a soldier were killed in a gunfight in Kupwara,Jammu and Kashmir,Friday night.
The Army spotted two militants trying to cross the Line of Control into Tangdhar Thursday night and challenged them. The militants,however,opened fire. The Army retaliated and shot dead one of them. They then went after the other,spotted him Friday night and killed him,but not before he had taken down an Army man.
In all,the Army has killed 12 infiltrators in Kupwara district over the past week five in the Hafruda forests of Handwara Thursday,four in Machil Tuesday,one in Keran Monday. Infiltration bids by militants have seen a rise in recent months,particularly in Kupwara,the Army claimed,but added that most of them have been foiled.
Nearly two months before the latest series of infiltration attempts,five militants were killed while trying to infiltrate into Keran on July 9.
And recently,the security forces killed Qari Yasir,the operations chief of the Jaish-e-Mohammad in Kashmir. Police claimed Yasir was an expert in planning infiltrations and would receive incoming in Kupwara.
