An Army personnel died and six others were injured — three of them critically — when a powerful IED exploded in Goalpara district in lower Assam,about 100 km west of Guwahati,on Tuesday. The anti-talk ULFA faction headed by Paresh Barua has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast was triggered at 10.20 am when an administrative-cum-logistics convoy of the Army was moving from Kokrajhar to Agia in Goalpara,defence PRO Lt Col S S Phogat said. The incident occurred when the convoy was about 10 km short of its destination. The injured,of whom three are in a critical condition,were brought to the Base Hospital here.

There are intelligence inputs that the faction may try to create trouble during the run-up to the Independence Day.
