Coming down against manipulation of promotions, the armed forces tribunal has quashed the appointment of the Armys top legal officer, holding that the process of selection needs to be redone as it did not follow the norms.
In a significant order, the Chandigarh Bench of the tribunal has struck down the appointment of Brig T Prashad as Major General in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) department, the Armys judicial branch that looks after disciplinary proceedings and legal matters.
The Bench has held that the Army board that selected Prashad as Maj Gen over two other Brigadiers acted hastily and did not follow due process as the ACR (Annual Confidential Report) of the officer was modified a day before the selection took place.
The tribunal has now directed the Army to hold a new process of selection and consider the officers afresh. The two affected Brigadiers Dinkar Adeeb and P K Sharma both of whom are senior to Prashad had approached the tribunal saying that the ACR of the officer had been modified on the eve of the selection, resulting in his empanelling.
