The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the appointments of vice-chancellors and pro-vice chancellors, made recently by former Governor Devanand Konwar in various universities of Bihar.
The court stayed the notifications in this regard and said that the senior-most dean of each university will perform the function of the vice-chancellor. It has now posted the matter for further hearing on April 14.
The Bench passed the order on the petition filed by the Bihar government and some professors who have challenged the appointment made by Konwar.
The Patna High Court had on December 7 quashed appointment of six of the eight vice-chancellors by the Governor.
The judgment was given on a writ petition stating that the Governor had made unilateral appointments without consulting the state government. The court had directed the Governor to make fresh appointments within 30 days in consultation with the state government.
Earlier,a single bench had also struck down the appointments. However, same persons were later re-appointed as the vice-chancellors and pro-vice chancellors of the universities.
