Two days after the arrest of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax Sumitra Banerjee by the CBI’s anti-corruption bureau,Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax,Circle 3,Anjali Bambole was arrested on Monday, allegedly for demanding a bribe from a builder.

Bambole had allegedly surveyed the tax liability of the Thane builder’s firm, while Banerjee had supervised it and demanded a bribe.

Banerjee and her husband Subratho were arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.50 crore from the builder. The CBI has also unearthed property owned by Banerjee and recovered cash from their houses.

“Rs 46 lakh in cash and foreign currency worth Rs 10 lakh were seized from Banerjee’s Chembur residence. We also found Rs 59 lakh in cash and jewellery from the two bank lockers operated by her. Besides,Banerjee owns property in Malaysia,a flat in Pune and two in Chembur. From Bambole’s flat,we recovered Rs 6 lakh in cash. She owns three plots in Nagpur, three in Panvel and a house in Andheri,” said CBI,DIG,Sonali Mishra.

Officials said they were investigating the role of a senior official named by Banerjee in the case.

According to the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Wing,Banerjee and her assistant Bambole had on March 24 examined the documents of the builder and conducted survey of his sites.

“Sumitra told the builder that tax liability of his firm would be Rs 25 crore. She gave an offer to the builder that the tax liability could be brought down to Rs 2 crore if he paid a bribe of Rs 1.50 crore to her,” CBI Joint Director (Western Region) Rishi Raj Singh said.

The builder, however, lodged a complaint with the CBI,which laid a trap and caught Banerjee red-handed while accepting the bribe. According to the agency,Bambole was to get a share of the bribe amount. ENS & AGENCIES
