A blast in the heart of Manipur capital Imphal on Tuesday injured five persons including two students of a nearby school. The blast,over a month after nine migrant workers were killed in another explosion in the city,took place at 5.58 in the morning near the Dharamshala in Thangal Bazaar,where traders and businessmen from other parts of the country usually stay. The Dharamshala is close to Bhairodan Hindi High School.
Imphal police said an IED triggered by remote spewed out no splinters but created a crater 2.5 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep and damaged a classroom of the school.
One of the injured was discharged after first-aid,while the remaining four were admitted to hospital.
The bomb was placed under a cart in an area where migrant daily wage earners line up their carts. Most migrant workers here hail from Bihar and Assam. While no group claimed responsibility for the blast,police said the outsider community was the likely target as the area was inhabited by them.
Thangal Bazaar is Imphals main business district. It is in Thangal-Paona Bazaar area,adjacent localities,that non-Manipuri traders live and work. Families from Rajasthan have been living here for generations and the population from outside the state is approximately 3-4 lakh.
The blast comes just over a month after nine migrant workers were killed and twelve injured in a blast at Khoyathong,not far from the site of Tuesdays explosion. All those killed or injured were non-Manipuri labourers and employed by Simplex,the company carrying out several government projects. The IED was triggered by remote when the workers were covering a nullah to create parking space. Labourers in Manipur are part of the floating population and work when projects are assigned. They come to work without their families and live in a group in the area.
