Bigwigs like Anil Ambani,Sachin Tendulkar,D Y Patil and Shankar Mahadevan figure in the list of defaulters prepared by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for allegedly evading cess on their cars.
In a cess recovery drive initiated to identify cars that were registered in its jurisdiction but whose owners had not paid one per cent cess,the NMMC has issued notices to these four defaulters among others. Patil is the Tripura Governor while Mahadevan is a singer-music composer We have served notices to Tendulkar,(Anil)Ambani,Mahadevan and Patil at least three to four times since September but didnt get any response from them, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mahavir Pendhari told PTI today.
Pendhari said representatives of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and D Y Patil have approached the NMMC and assured that the cess will be paid on Tuesday.
The drive was started in September 2009 and the NMMC has collected Rs seven crore so far.
Often,people get their cars registered in Navi Mumbai to avail of a lower cess regime and to avoid paying five per cent cess in Mumbai where Octroi is also levied,Pendhari said.
About 1.5 lakh cars have been registered with NMMC and registration details regarding 24,000 of them have been scrutinised so far. Simultaneously,the civic body has set up an office at Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Navi Mumbai to target all the fresh vehicles being registered,Pendhari said.
Cars whose owners are in the defaulters list range from Maruti to luxury cars like Mercedes,BMW,Audi and Camry,the official said.
