Unless they are voting for Independent candidates,electors in the first phase in Andhra Pradesh will be choosing from a list of who is who of crorepatis that include an actress,a film producer,an Urdu editor,a hotelier and real estate magnets. The first phase of elections here is all about big,big money and moolah power. Of the 315 Lok Sabha candidates in the 22 constituencies,64 are crorepatis with Nama Nageshwara Rao,the TDP candidate from Khammam,leading the pack with assets worth Rs 174 crore. Nageshwara Rao is managing director of Madhucon Group which is into construction,power and granite mining.
Among the well-known crorepatis are G Vivekanand,managing director of Visakha Industries,who is Congress candidate from Peddapalle. He declared total assets worth Rs 72 crore. Congress candidate from Medak Narendranath Chaganla,a hotelier with a vast fruit business,has declared assets from 56 crore.
The two high-profile ministers Union Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chowdhury has declared assets worth Rs 38 crore while Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Puranderaswari has declared Rs 20 crore worth of assets.
Of the 64 crorepati candidates,32 have been fielded by major parties like the Congress,TDP,PRP,TRS,Mana Party,LSP and the BJP having a combined wealth of Rs 660 crore. As many as 25 of the 32 candidates have assets worth over Rs 5 crore. The Congress is contesting in all the 22 LS seats and 18 of its candidates are crorepatis. Nine of the 21 candidates of the PRP,eight of the 21 BJP candidates,seven of the 11 TDP candidates and seven of the 11 TRS candidates are crorepatis. Of the 135 Independents,only five have assets worth Rs 1 crore or above.
Kasani Gyaneshwar,real estate dealer,who is Mana Party candidate from Chevella,has declared assets worth Rs 45 crore. But analysts say Gyaneshwar who has hopped from the TDP to the Congress to the Mana Party must be worth more than Rs 500 crore – probably why he has not mentioned his PAN in his affidavit.
Allu Aravind,film producer and Chiranjeevis brother-in-law,has declared assets worth Rs 45 crore. Aravind is contesting on PRP ticket from Anakapalle and is pitted against another crorepati candidate Sabbam Hari of the Congress. Hari,a businessman,has assets worth Rs 8 crore.
T Devender Goud,president of Nava Telangana Praja Party (NTPP) which he merged with the PRP,owns assets worth Rs 35 crore. Goud is contesting the Malkajgiri LS seat on a PRP ticket.
Popular yesteryear firebrand actress M Vijayashanti who is contesting on a TRS ticket from Medak has declared assets worth Rs 27 crore. Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy,Congress candidate from Bhongir,has assets worth Rs 19 crore.
Nizamabad sitting Congress MP Madhu Yakshi Goud who is contesting again has worth Rs 11 crore. Editor of Urdu newspaper Siasat Zahid Ali Khan who is contesting the Hyderabad LS seat on a TDP ticket is worth Rs 9 crore while BJPs state unit president Bandaru Dattatraya contesting from Secunderabad has declared assets worth Rs 7 crore.
TDPs Mahbubnagar sitting MP A P Jithender Reddy,an exporter with a departmental store chain in Hyderabad,who is contesting from Chevella,is worth Rs 26 crore.
Candidates who did not bother to mention their PANs are K Ganapathi Rao,PRP candidate from Vizianagaram (Rs 3 crore); Mallavarapu Jeremiah,Independent from Khammam (4 crore); Manda Jagannath,Congress candidate from Nagarkurnool (2 crore); and D V Subba Rao,BJP candidate from Visakhapatnam ( Rs 2 crore).
