Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police S S P Yadav has landed in a soup after the State Election Commission sought an explanation for his alleged remarks praising the Congress Government and Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting with police officials of Kurnool district on Sunday.

Yadav denied the allegations saying he is a responsible police officer who would not think of making such comments and lower the dignity of his office. “I did not say anything like that at the police meetings,” he told The Indian Express.

The DGP is alleged to have told his subordinates at two meetings that the chief minister had facilitated the recruitment of 37,500 police personnel to fill vacancies and that no other state had taken such a decision.

Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao said he has sought a report from the DGP about his alleged remarks. “It has been brought to the notice of the EC that the DGP has praised the party in power. We have sought the videotapes of the meetings and also sought a report from him. He is expected to write back to us on Monday. Then we will decide,” Subba Rao said, after a complaint was lodged by Opposition parties in this regard.

TDP’s organising secretary and former MP K Ramamohan Rao stated in a representation to the EC that elections cannot be free and fair if the police were being influenced by the DGP himself. “He has spoken as if he is a member of the Congress,” Ramamohan Rao told Subba Rao.

The TDP has also sent another complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging that Telugu news channel Sakshi TV — owned by the CM’s son Y S Jaganmohan Reddy — was being used to malign their political opponents in general and TDP leaders in particular. The TDP alleged that since Sunday,a malicious caricature advertisement is being telecast in which N Chandrababu Naidu is shown as having stabbed the TDP’s founder-president N T Rama Rao.

Meanwhile, the full Election Commission is scheduled to visit the state on March 12 and 13 to hold meetings with state officials,Subba Rao said.
