Andhra Pradesh Speaker N Manohar on Saturday disqualified nine Congress and six TDP MLAs for defying their respective party whips during a no-confidence motion moved by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti on March 16.
Both the Congress and TDP had filed memos with the Speaker, seeking disqualification of the rebels who also shifted loyalties to YSR Congress Party, and showcause notices were issued on March 31.
As Assembly and Lok Sabha polls are due in April 2014,no by-elections will be held for the 15 seats that have fallen vacant due to Saturdays decision.
Speaker Manohar said that in a three-week-long process he went through the petitions filed by the Congress and TDP.
During the no-confidence voting,Congress had issued a whip to all its members to vote against the motion while the TDP had issued a whip to its members to remain neutral. The Congress defeated the motion.
All the rebel MLAs who are now supporting YSR Congress Party requested the Speaker when they appeared before him for hearing,to disqualify them as they willingly defied their respective party whips. Three TDP MLAs escaped disqualification by stating that they did not receive the whip and were not present in the Assembly when the voting took place.
Among the disqualified Congress MLAs are some prominent ones like Kakinada MLA D Chandrasekhara Reddy,P Ramachandra Reddy from Punganur and Eluru MLA A Srinivas. Other Congress MLAs disqualified are B Shiva Reddy from Darsi,R Ranga Rao from Bobbili,Perni Venkataramana from Machilipatnam,G Ravi Kumar from Adanki,Rajesh Kumar from Chintalapudi and Jogi Ramesh from Peddana.
