An ear for the right music

When he would hum something,he was completely out of tune.

Yash Chopra’s movies became wouldn’t have been what they are without their music. Be it the haunting Neela aasmaan so gaya from Silsila, the soulful Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein from Kabhie Kabhie,or the ebullient Rang bhare baadal se from Chandni, the songs were like characters in each movie.

“When he would hum something,he was completely out of tune. But he had the knack for what was right and what was not. If the song wasn’t working for him,he would tell you,” says Uttam Singh, who composed the music for Dil Toh Pagal Hai. Manna Dey,who sang Aye meri zohara jabeen in Waqt, broke down on the phone. “The man who created such happy memories with such happy songs is gone,” he said.

The Shiv-Hari combination provided the magic for films such as Deewar,Chandni,Lamhe and Darr, while the duo Jatin Lalit did so for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Lalit Pandit says,“No song was ever finalised without a sitting in Yash ji’s house. If he had the slightest doubt,he would change things at the last minute.”

For Veer Zaara,Chopra used some of Madan Mohan’s unreleased compositions.
