Making a case for the participation of PSUs in a mega tender floated by the Air Force to replace its fleet of transport aircraft,Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel has written to Defence Minister A K Antony, urging him to not restrict the competition to the private sector.
The Avro replacement programme to procure 56 transport aircraft for the IAF has been hanging fire for several months with the Defence Ministry restricting the competition to private players in the Indian defence industry. While it has not received responses for the competition yet from the industry, several foreign firms are in negotiations with Indian players to present a joint proposal for the contract.
Patel has written that several PSUs meet the ministry criteria, but are being denied the opportunity only because they are PSUs.
