Allahabad High Court gets 9 new judges

The high court,including the Lucknow bench,has a sanctioned strength of 160 judges,but has been working with a depleted staff.

Kumar Gupta,Surender Kumar (DSJ,Agra),Anil Kumar Agrawal (DSJ,Allahabad),Surendra Vikram Singh Rathore (DSJ,Meerut),Sudhir Kumar Saxena (DSJ,Kanpur),Kaleem Ullah Khan (DSJ,Bareilly),Ashok Pal Singh (DSJ,Moradabad) and Vijay Prakash Pathak.

While Gupta was serving as the Registrar General of the Allahabad High Court,Pathak was Special Officer (Vigilance) of the high court. Mathur was director of the Institute of Judicial Training and Research in Lucknow.

All the nine new judges of the high court will be administered the oath of office in the chief justice’s chamber on Monday at 10 am. It is reliably learnt that within a few months’ time,some more judges may be appointed at the Allahabad High Court.

The last time judges were appointed in a chunk to the high court was in April 2009,when 18 judges were administered the oath. However,since then nearly 20 judges have retired. The latest appointments are part of the list of 19,which was cleared earlier by the chief justice. The other 10 names have been drawn from the bar.

The Allahabad High Court,the largest in the country,had a pendency of nearly 79 lakh cases. So far,the high court was functioning with 62 judges,15 of whom were posted at the Lucknow bench.
