Ahead of the municipal polls,an unauthenticated Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) poster has warned the panches and sarpanches to resign or “face dire consequences”.

“We warn that all panches and sarpanches should submit their resignations to the government within a week. Otherwise the jehadi leadership will act against you. We hope that you will show wisdom and not force us to act,” say the posters, which are written in Urdu and attributed to the Lashkar’s district commander.

Across the Valley, the panches and sarpanches have already started to express their dissociation from the panchayats through newspaper advertisements following attacks by unidentified gunmen on several

of them.

“We are not associated with any political party and have participated in the process only for the betterment of our villages. But still we have got threats and some of our colleagues have been killed,” said one such official from Pulwama.
