Echoing his party chief Sharad Pawar who had expressed anguish over Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s remarks on coalition politics,Union Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel stated today that his party has been a “responsible and supportive” ally and cannot be termed as a “compulsion” of coalition politics.

“The NCP has always been a responsible and supportive ally. How can we be termed as a compulsion of coalition politics, hence coming in the way of the government’s progressive agenda?” said Patel. This came even as the Congress sought to play down Pawar’s remarks, maintaining that there could be some “misunderstanding” on his part.

“The Prime Minister was very clear and very specific. He has said the right thing but Pawar appears to have not understood it properly. I think there is some misunderstanding on his part, otherwise he would not have given this statement,” Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said at a press briefing here today.
