Chinas ZTE Corp said on Thursday it had received a contract to supply telecoms equipment to Indias No 2 mobile operator,Reliance Communications. Under the agreement ZTE will build and supply 2G and 3G equipment for eight of Reliances network circles out of 13, ZTE India said in a statement.
Earlier this year,India had barred some local mobile phone operators from placing orders with Huawei and ZTE on suspicion Chinese equipment might have spying technology embedded to intercept sensitive conversations and government communications. Last month,sources told Reuters the government had allowed Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices to buy equipment from ZTE and Huawei after the Chinese firms agreed to New Delhi’s tighter rules to address security concerns.
ZTE said on Thursday it would supply second-and-third-generation equipment to Reliance Comm in eight zones. It did not disclose financials. Tata Teleservices said earlier this month it had given Huawei a contract to roll out the company’s third-generation mobile network.
