Five days after a wall collapse at an anganwadi centre killed seven children,Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday urged the Centre to provide money to build anganwadi centres. In his letter to Union Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath,Naveen asked for funds to build 50000 anganwadi centres. He said of the 71,000 anganwadi centres, only 20,000 have their own buildings and the rest are run either in school buildings, community buildings or in rented houses.

Not only does this deprive the children of a meaningful and joyful learning environment,it is also a serious hazard, he wrote. On July 9,the wall of an anganwadi centre operating in an abandoned room of a school collapsed, killing seven children.
