The alleged 2007 Ajmer bomber,Bhavesh Patel, has told the investigators that soon after the blast, the group had assembled near Limkheda,a village near Godhra. They were worried about the second bomb kept inside the dargah that did not explode.

Patel was arrested from near Khan Market in Delhi on Tuesday. The blast was planned to deter Hindus from visiting the Sufi shrine. On Wednesday,an NIA court in Jaipur remanded Patel to 15 days in police custody. He was then brought back to Delhi.

Preliminary questioning revealed that due to the low causality in the blast,Patel,Mukesh Vasani,Suresh Nayar,Mehul and Sunny had tried to ascertain the problem with the bomb. While Patel and Vasani have been arrested, the other three are absconding.

It was later found that one of bombs didn’t go off as the SIM card inserted inside the mobile phone, which acts as timer for the bomb, was deactivated by the service provider as it was not in use for long. The SIM was among the 11 SIM cards bought from Asansol-Jamtara by Devender Gupta using fake identity documents.

The NIA said the Ajmer bombs were assembled in Indore. They were first moved to Godhra by by slain RSS activist Sunil Joshi in a Santro car (MP 43 C 0903) and then to Ajmer. From Godhra, five people including Patel took the bombs to Ajmer on October 11,2007,morning. The four pipe bombs were assembled by Ramji Kalsangra and Sandeep Dange at the former’s residence in Indore. Two of them were used in Ajmer and rest in the blasts at Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad.

On October 10,2007,Joshi,Mehul and Sunny came to Godhra at the house of Vasani in a Santro car. They handed over two bags containing bombs to Patel. Joshi left for Dewas in the car while all five travelled in a private bus from Godhra to Baroda and then in a private bus from Baroda to Udaipur.

From Udaipur to Ajmer, they travelled in an unknown jeep used to transport newspapers in the early hours. At 11 am on October 11,the group reached Ajmer. The group then proceeded to Pushkar and came back at 5 pm to the Ajmer bus stand. An autorickshaw was hired from the bus stand to Ajmer Dargah.

Soon after the arrest,Patel had tried to mislead the NIA by giving a false identity. He was found carrying an i-pod full of religious songs. A native of Bharuch,Gujarat,he has been on the run from 2010 and used to stay in temples and dharamsalas in far-flung areas.

Before being named in the case,Patel reportedly ran an STD booth at Bharuch. He claimed that he came in touch with Mukesh Vasani and Suresh Nayar in 2000 while attending RSS shakas. Nayar introduced them to Joshi.
