In what will be his first such interaction with business leaders in more than four years,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has agreed to address the annual meeting of industry body Ficci in December.
The decision comes close on the heels of the government announcing a series of reform measures and Singh explaining their rationale through a televised address to the nation after the Trinamool Congress withdrew support to the UPA.
The Ficci meeting is likely to be held on December 24. Singhs last such address at the annual meeting of an industry chamber was in 2008 when he was the chief guest at both the CII and Ficci meetings.
He has agreed to be the chief guest at the FICCI meeting and also address members. The recent reform measures give him an opportunity to speak to India Inc and assure them of the governments commitment to growth, a source told The Indian Express.
Other industry chambers are also hopeful the Prime Minister will address their events. Our members want to know about government policies and what better person to address them than the PM. We will also try invite him for our AGM scheduled for April, said a CII official.
While the PM has largely kept away from industry body meetings,he has participated in events organised by them in partnership with government departments. He attended the India Telecom 2011 conference jointly organised by Ficci and the Department of Telecom as well as Emerging Kerala 2012,organised by the government of Kerala in collaboration with CII and Nasscom.
